« GA 20 to be widened between Sugar Hill and the Chattahoochee »
Monday, March 7, 2011 at 2:59PM This is long overdue but thankfully is within sight now. Gwinnett Couty will receive $28 million from the Georgia DOT is help pay for widening GA Highway 20 from Sugar Hill to the Chattahoochee River.
The county Board of Commissioners last week approved an updated agreement with the state Department of Transportation that provides the money. It will be used to buy land to widen the highway from Peachtree Industrial Boulevard to the Chattahoochee River.
Let's now hope that a new bridge over the river and the widening of the highway on the Forsyth County side will soon follow. Anyone who has to travel that route knows all too well the traffic jams heading into Gwinnett County during evening rush hour.

I wonder how many properties will have to be "stolen" to make your long awaited project a reality? What's good for the goose ought to be good for the gander.
Mayor Wilbanks, thanks for your comment. I recognize that there is rare needs for eminent domain. It is, after all, constitutionally permitted. My contention and that of others is whether it SHOULD be used? Hopefully, that won't be necessary with the GA 20 project. I think the key is whether a government project for public use is critical. While everyone is entitled to their opinion, I suspect there is little doubt that a major non-interstate highway that is clearly of inadequate capacity is a critical need. Especially on a widening project where a road's route cannot be completely changed as with a new highway, a certain tract of land could be absolutely necessary for the project to move forward. People may disagree, but I would have a hard time thinking that almost any park in a specific location would be deemed critical. Parks are a valuable asset to a community no doubt but I personally would have a hard time putting them in the same category as a highway. The question is whether other voters would agree.
Thanks again for your comment and for reading the Buzz!
