« Archer and Mountain View pick mascots »

Archer Tigers.
Mountain View Bears.
Wow, could they have chosen two more boring, generic mascots? Yellow Jackets would have been vastly superior to either of these! Oh well, I guess it is ok that our county is inundated with references to the Georgia Bulldogs while the state's premier instituion of higher learning goes unrecognized. The Archer logo even mimics North Carolina-based Appalachain State University! I will just continue to be a Central Gwinnett Black Knight fan! Once a Black Knight, always a Black Knight!

Thanks for all the updates on the mascots. Is this the first time the GCPS hired consultants for this process? I'm not that impressed with their results. First, Central Gwinnett's colors are black and gold (Pittsburgh Steelers rather than metallic). While Mountain View and Central may never be in the same regions, they share a common boundary. Ironically, part of the Mountain View district used to go to Central( the old Dyer Elementary area that went up GA 20 and Braselton Highway). I might have use Bruins or Grizzlies rather than Bears. Also, that red tiger for Archer looks like it should be serving up a bowl of Frosted Flakes. I would have gone with crimson or burgandy rather than just red (like Loganville). Although, I thought they might go with a purple and gold scheme like LSU.
I'm not happy about this, not the mascots but the process.
My daugther was expecting to be part of the process to pick mascots and be a part of her new schoool as weel as scores of our neighbors and friends. Years ago she saw how it was done with Peachtree Ridge, and part of here leaving MIll Creek (far away) was that she would be able to participate in a school less than a mile from her house.
We work with the Bus transportations, Commissioners and local groups for turn signals and traffic problems, we keep our eye in the paper everyday, look for websites being created, and WHAM left out of the process. IN fact everyone was left out of the process but a select few friends of those in charge.
I even named the middle school on the same property! Yet they can't work with the local community?
jbristor,
You said you named the middle school?
Please, tell me, why Twin Rivers? What rivers? Alcovy and Chattahochoee? They're both miles away, even by how the crow flies.
And why Mountain View? Because it's in Hog Mountain?
I'm curious...
Apalachee and Alcovy. The source/headwaters of the Apalachee starts on the 10 acre plot of land behind the church and the new gas station at Braselton and Old Peachtree close to Kings Valley Drive flowing to the east.
The Alcovy source/headwaters start at the Lakes of Old Peachtree (also near the corner of Braselton and Old Peachtree) and flow Southeast. Thus Twin Rivers Middle school is about a mile from the source of both rivers. And in the neighborhoods of students. I submitted US Fish & Wildlife and USGS maps with the name submission.
I didn't name Mountain View, but supposed it was a nice way to tip their hat to "Hog Mountain" but leaving out the "Hog". Surprised they didnt pick Razorbacks for the Mascot.
I've lived in the area all my life and didn't know that! Thanks, that's the kind of trivia I enjoy learning.
FWIW, as a teenager I spent many afternoons fishing in Crow's (5) Lakes, as "The Lakes of Old Peachtree" used to be known.
And Twin Rivers is in my backyard.
Well in reality, they are 'creeks' at that point... but "Twin Rivers" sounds better than "Multi-Creek Middle School" :)
If you are in the neighborhood, are you familiar with ACCOP (Alliance of Concerned Citizens of Old Peachtree)?
Here's a picture of the Apalachee River near it's start.

Will Twin Rivers have an athletic program? Will thay be The Bears also?
Regarding athletics, I would presume so. Gwinnett County middle schools field boys and girls basketball but not a full athletic program like the high schools.
If we get a softball team, I have a lefty pitcher who is a 5th. greader at Freemans Mill.
