« Gwinnett cops live in and protect parks »

The Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation Department has a residential police program in certain parks aross the county. In exchange for keeping watch and providing security in a park, a Gwinnett County police officer lives in a county-owned facility on park property. Six parks are part of this program with a seventh coming in the spring. This is an excellent idea that saves taxpayer dollars while enhancing security in Gwinnett parks. We need more innovative thinking like this from the county government and less of the thinking that gave us socialized garbage.

While we were walking for exercise my wife and I stopped to talk to a Gwinnett police officer patrolling Little Mulberry Park on bicycle a few weeks ago. My wife wanted to know how safe it would be for her to come there to walk by herself and how often the park was patrolled. Maj. Carl Moulder was very cordial and told her there were no guarantees, but despite a well-publicised case in Tribble Mill park last year, there were few incidents in the park system.
I had noticed the caretaker's house on our previous trips to the park and was surprised to find out Mr. Moulder lives there! After he told us, I said, "this is tough duty, huh?" Moulder smiled and said, "yeah, somebody has to do it."
This is a great program where everyone wins, but the big winner is Mr. Moulder - he gets a dream house with an 890 acre backyard in compensation for the low pay and danger of a police officer's job.
