Update on District 4 commisison race

Tommy Hunter, candidate for District 4 CommissionerThere is some activity in the race for Gwinnett County Commission District 4.  Tommy Hunter’s campaign website has gone live.  I really love his blog entry regarding socialized garbage.  It is very refreshing to hear a politician bluntly tell you like it is.  (I promise I posted my blog entry on socialized garbage before reading Tommy’s comments!)  I have read Tommy’s comments on TalkGwinnett! for some time and I have always found him to be a common-sense conservative.  While it is too early to endorse anyone in this race, I like what I read from Tommy Hunter!

Tim Sullivan, candidate for District 4 CommissionerAlso, in a story I missed a couple of weeks ago, Tim Sullivan, an IT and real estate professional from Buford, has declared his candidacy for the seat.  You can find his campaign website here.  I did see an immediate red flag with Tim.  When I went to his campaign Facebook page, I saw that Mike Beaudreau had left a comment - “Go Tim!!!!!”  If Mike Beaudreau is behind Sullivan in this race (and I do not know that Mike has officially endorsed Tim or not) I say”Buyer Beware.”  Interestingly, Sullivan kinda looks like Beaudreau!  But let’s wait and hear what Tim has to say on the issues before we label him as a Mike Beaudreau clone.  Only then can we make a decision as to whether he deserves our support for the commission seat.

Let’s not forget that there is another candidate in this race, John Heard.  I look forward to following the campaigns as we move toward the primary this summer.

NOTE (5 March 10) - Thanks to reader dewood who noted in the comments that there are two additional candidates in this race: Gerald Cagle and Ron Silver.

    1. Interestingly the AJC article says “Sullivan formed and ran the Hamilton Mill Homeowner Coalition, a group dedicated to preserving the residential nature of the Hamilton Mill Road area.”

He can keep his idea of preserving the residential nature of things. Hamilton Mill has been ruined with development.

Sounds like he will continue the development at any cost Kenerly gave us.

    2. What is known about Gerald Cagle and Ron Silver also running for District 4?

Also in District 2, we have Keith Shewbert-R, Jose Perez-R, Lynette Howard-R, Robert Byars-D.

    3. Thanks for the list of all in the races. I have been wanting to do a summary of the status and that helps. I was not sure where to find such a list as the article on Sullivan did not mention who else was running.

    4. I met for over an hour with Mr. Hunter (for breakfast at a BBQ restaurant, no less) and really liked the man. I believe he is genuine and will do exactly what he says. He doesn’t owe anybody anything and he will not be worrying about his next election - instead he will just do what he honestly believes is best for the County. I certainly wish him all the best.

    5. I disagree with dewood above. The Hamilton Mill Homeowner Coalition has worked hard to keep the efforts of kenerly in check. Development in that area would be much more dense had it not been for the efforts of Tim and his group. I have known and worked alongside Tim Sullivan for the past several years. Tim and the Hamilton Mill Homeowner Coalition have made a positive impact along Hamilton Mill Road. He has focused on smart, controlled development. What I like about the guy the most is that he is not a developer. Unlike our current “commissioner”. Tim is exactly the guy we need.

    6. “Smart, controlled development.” Major red flag. That is often a code term that really boils down to an infringement on property rights. It also sounds a lot like Mike Beaudreau and we see what we have in him. The last thing this county needs is a second Mike Beaudreau on the commission.

    7. Smart controlled development is my opinion of his style, not a quote from Tim. And in my opinion having at least some control over development is better than the “ram it down your throat” style we are dealing with currently. Are you suggesting all development be halted in Gwinnett county? That’s what it sounds like to me.

    8. Jack, first, I failed to thank you for reading the Buzz in my previous comment.

Regarding your question on halting development, my position is quite the opposite. I am very pro-property rights and bristle at any unwarranted government restrictions on a property owner’s right to use her property as she sees fit and to economically benefit from that use where applicable. Of course, the use of one’s property cannot be considered in a vacuum. The impact of any use on the rights of neighboring property owners to similarly benefit from their properties must be considered. However, this consideration should only consider direct, material impacts, not impacts of the “I don’t like such and such use” type of opposition. Unfortunately, from my observations, “controlled growth” often rests on opposition more on the “don’t like” side of the spectrum even though opponents may not experience any real negative impact to them or their ability to use their property. Unfortunately, some politicians, Mike Beaudreau being a great example, caters to these voices and, at times, the property rights of others often get left in the wake. It is this cavalier treatment of property rights that causes me to see a very large red flag” with terms such as “controlled growth.”

    10. Ron, thanks for the reading the Buzz and contributing your information! With you and Tommy Hunter reading the site that is nearly half the GOP field! Now, if we can the remaining candidates to join in, we can have a virtual debate here on the Buzz!

FinanceBuzz, I’m game. What we have to do now is stop the out of control Gwinnett BOC. It seems that the well being of the Citizens of this County isn’t a big concern to them.
Our citizens can’t continue to fund this kind of government.
