Georgia Force, Arena League 2009 season axed

The economy claimed another victim today as Gwinnett lost its second major sporting entity for 2009.  Earlier this year, the AT&T Classic PGA golf tournament was shelved after being unable to find a new title sponsor.  Today, the Arena Football League opted to cancel its 2009 season, thus idling Gwinnett’s Georgia Force.  This leaves eight new open dates for the Gwinnett Arena to fill.  Arthur Blank, owner of the Force, supported the cancellation, saying “we support the decision to focus our energies on securing the long-term success of the Arena Football League.”
